How Are You Wired As A Leader?

Sep 2, 2016 | Posted by William Sumner | Leadership |

How are you wired as a leader? What does that even mean?

Some people will ask, “Isn’t leadership really innate? Isn’t the best leader among us? Aren’t they really born to be among us?” And they will give you evidence as to why some people are born to be leaders. You look at someone’s life and you say, “You know back when they were little kids on the playground they were always the one leading the exercises, changing the game or maybe as kids they were always the first ones chosen in sports or club activities. Or when they were in school they were the ones the teacher always picked on.”

In Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers” there is a great study where he talks about professional hockey players. The reason why this is an unusual book and why it is so awesome in how it looks at success is the biggest correlated criteria that he could find was their birth dates. Because for hockey players in Canada, when you are born on January 1st you are in that year group. So if you’re born in January 1st and you’re playing against a kid in that year group or that was born on December 31st, you’re a year older than him. That doesn’t matter when you are 33 and he is 32. When you’re 5 and he is 4, you’re 20% bigger and faster. So 80% of professional hockey players have their birthdays fall in the first quarter.

What happens is this becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. That this person is a leader a lot of the times, but not every time. But looking at this notion of, are leaders really born? The answer is some are, but a lot are not.

There are other factors at play. What you’re going to learn throughout The Inevitable You® coaching system is we can teach you every skill. You have every skill, and you have to unlearn some things you learned in grade school.

We’re going to reinstall what I call “neural software” to create new beliefs about what it means to be a leader. But we are all born to be leaders. It’s innate in all of us. Now some a little sharper than others but the vast majority of people have far more leadership skills. So we’re going to look really hard at this wiring.

So I want you to do a little, tiny exercise. We’re going to pull what’s called an identity exercise and what I want you to do is get your pen and paper out, and I want you to write down five adjectives, two nouns and two verbs that best describe you as a leader. Five adjectives, two nouns, and two verbs that best describe your identity as a leader, and I want you to use your words. You’re sitting in the privacy of your computer or smartphone here, don’t B. S. yourself. I’m not going to put any of this on display. You can ask me questions about it, but you are not going to be forced to go anywhere with this.

So use your words. Use your normal self-talk. When you’re driving to work, when you think about how you are going to solve a problem, or how you are going to get promoted and you say things like, “Well they should promote me because I’m methodical and dependable.” You’ve lived your life in this body, in this journey and in this life. You know how this works.

An example of this might be:

“I am a kind, caring, dependable, smart, and methodical.”

Those are your five adjectives you might pick. And the nouns might be:

“I’m really a good diplomat and a negotiator. That’s why I’m a good leader because I am sensitive as a diplomat to everybody’s point of view and I negotiate and I compromise.”

Maybe those are the nouns that you pick for yourself and you create a great environment and you encourage personal empowerment. So this becomes a great working sentence for you.

“I am kind, caring, dependable, smart, methodical diplomat, and negotiator that creates a safe environment and encourages personal empowerment.”

So go ahead, write it down now, your sentence with your five adjectives, your two nouns, and your two verbs. Go.

What did you discover? How powerful is your identity command as a leader? Can it be improved?

What you’re going to do as you interact and understand that coaching system is redesign and upgrade it. You’re going to change this sentence. You’re going to keep some of the words, not that what you’re doing today is dumb or bad, it’s just might not be as powerful, exciting and outrageous as it possibly could be if you got really excited and thought about it.

When you now begin to do that as your identity statement, even if we look at these five adjectives, two nouns and two verbs that you did and the new one does the content processing versus the old one, you’re going to have a different experience. Because I’m going to appeal to the new leader today already as we’re going to continue to create and understand this content.

Testimonials

  • “I am a client of Bill’s from both an individual perspective as well as Master Mind’s. So I have seen him from several angles as he has worked with me, a number of my staff, and others that I have grown close to in this wonderful community of personal development and growth. I have always felt Bill to be amazing at what he did, and believe that by going to Leadership Academy I would improve my leadership and business skills. I cannot begin to tell you, even after all the work that I have done with Bill, what was in store for me. It is simply unbelievable! I walked out with tools and repeatable processes that allow me to go deeper into someone’s psychology, motivation, and behavioral choices than I ever, ever dreamed. I am a person that is consistently looking for ways to improve and I have attended several seminars and courses on leadership. This is the best I’ve ever had. I have the ability now to transform lives, motivate people and groups, in a way I never could before. I highly recommend the experience to anyone who wants to be better.”

    Eric Thompson

President, Windermere Real Estate Services Colorado

  • “Our team worked closely with Bill over the course of many months. Although we were quite a successful company and things were going well, we knew we hadn’t hit our potential, and weren’t quite sure what was holding us back. Working with Bill gave us tremendous insights into how we were creating corporate structures and dynamics out of particular and habitual ways of viewing our goals and problem sets. Bill stepped in and introduced a tool set to us, which in turn gave us hugely shifted and deeper perspectives about what we needed to do in order to redefine and expand our notions of success and its associated goals. Bill is uniquely talented at what he does. He not only brings diverse skills from a wide array of life experiences, but his intuition and insights into both corporate and personal mindsets and dynamics almost defy description. He uncovers the core blockages and obstacles which are preventing you from having your own clearest and deepest understanding of your current situation with uncanny, consistent and extremely valuable accuracy, and then he deftly helps show you not only the way beyond the quagmire, but provides you the tools to continue to assess and shift on your own. It bears repeating: Bill is uniquely talented; he delivered well beyond our very high expectations.”

  • “I have worked with Bill for several years now. I have always loved his message. I have bought tons of his books to give to my employees, friends, and strangers because The Inevitable You® message has been so instrumental in my life. Bill has pestered me for a while to attend Leadership Academy. I finally had the occasion to do so, and here’s is what I found astounding – I always believed much of what Bill did was unique to him. He has always told me this was “teachable” and I thought to myself, ”yea, yea, yea.” I knew that it could improve me, but I had no idea how close I would come to achieving the same effects that Bill has achieved with my company, my family, and complete strangers. It is simply amazing what I walked away with after three days. All the hype is real. You will have tools, real working tools, to influence people like you never dreamed. Do not allow money or time or any other excuse stand in your way. The only thing I regret is that I did not do this sooner. I am going to start sending other people in my company that are in key leadership positions to this experience. You have no idea what you will get from this. I am a true believer!”

    Rodger Ames

    CEO and President, Stadium Medical

  • “To Entrepreneurs, Leaders, and Whom it May Concern-

The skills and awareness I got from this three day course were immediately applicable to every important facet of my life.  Since my graduation, I am seeing big measurable results in my business, and my community work and personal relationships have both taken on new dimensions of meaning and fulfillment.

Simply put, my ability to accomplish goals has skyrocketed.  I attribute this to my integration of the stunningly effective tools of the Inevitable You system.  These techniques show you how to get in the center of where a goal comes from-  its fuel core, so to speak- and set up the right kind of chain reaction so that it can be accomplished without the constant need for brute force and willpower.

Imagine walking into a big meeting-  maybe its with a client, an employee, a partner, or maybe its just somebody you care about a lot like a family member.  Imagine walking into this meeting and knowing, just knowing, that your desired outcome has become about 85% more likely to happen.  This is one way to describe the effect of bringing the Inevitable You equipment into your toolbox.

At home my wife immediately noticed a change in me.  She said I seemed more sure of myself and that I was listening to her in a way that made her feel more connected.  She also said I sounded more at ease when she heard me on the phone with clients.  I’m convinced I am only beginning to scratch the surface of what I can do with the new skills and tools I got from those 6 days.  But even if I didn’t discover more benefits than I have already, it would still have been an tremendously successful investment of my resources.

In sum, the experience for me was at once challenging, liberating, productive, and really, really fun.  From a pure ROI perspective I couldn’t make a stronger recommendation for any professional or personal development investment.  Do yourself and all those who look to you for leadership a big favor, do The Inevitable® Leader.  And get ready for the next level!”
