What most miss in the “Leaders Own the Weather” tool… and it is a MASSIVE MISS
Last week focused on a very controversial point of leadership:
Leaders own EVERYTHING.
I teach in the metaphor, “who is responsible for learning, the student or the teacher?” While most sit in the middle and say “both,” and some say, “the teacher does their job, and the student must learn,” a few nudge towards the limit that it is the teacher’s responsibility.
Extraordinary leaders are NOT extraordinary because they have astonishing talents, incredible gifts, or innate leadership skills. They are extraordinary because their psychology is! (and in The Inevitable You® world, that means their “software” is epic.)
This is one of the key points.
And what most miss is this simple point: if you believe in extraordinary ownership, and you own everything, then that filters down through the entire organization. Imagine what that means!
EVERY. LEADER. OWNS. EVERYTHING.
EVERY. PERSON. WHO. WISHES. TO. LEAD. ON. YOUR. WATCH. OWNS. EVERYTHING.
So now, rather than arguing or blaming, and especially in those crucial, vital moments, people clamor to step up to own it. Everyone views it as not just part of their role (think of those few companies that say, every employee is a sales person, and the even fewer who actually believe it,) in your new leadership model, every person takes responsibility for outcomes, for LEADING.
It is simply amazing.
Oh by the way, I did not invent this – I live it. It is the principle of our elite military units.
Last week I asked you to question yourself and how you divvy the leadership pie. I said change that and watch what happens. This is another piece of the puzzle.
Inculcate this into every member of your team. Wow, watch what happens!
