Why would you ever want to write out an “I have a nightmare” speech?
Most of you know my “I Have a Dream” (IHAD) tool – it is one of the most powerful tools in my system:
- I talk about most people’s self-talk about their diet is harsh and difficult. Bookmark that.
- Go to Dr Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Two sentences and you get goose bumps when you hear it.
- Now write your speech about your health, your body, exercise, that gives YOU goose bumps. (it is not about your diet.)
- Would a diet be hard if that was your self-talk?
I further ask: Do you love this tool? Have you used it? (Everyone loves it, and no one thinks they have used it.)
I further explain this phenomena as one of the great points of NLP (Neural Linguistic Programming,) WE ALL use NLP, all the time! You generally use the unproductive side of a tool. In this case it is: I have a nightmare! (IHAN) I mime and mimic someone who hates their diet. I whine, I flop my body around.
Great tool, right? (if you want a 12 min explanation, or if you wish to discuss this in deeper detail with someone, watch this video:
Here’s the rub, (and this is definitely advanced stuff – that is why it is for you “demystify leaders”) would you ever have anyone actually write out their IHAN speech? Generally not – you don’t want them to anchor it or continue to work with it. You want them to write out their IHAD instead… and away they take off.
I had a particular client who was really good with the tools. He wrote a great “I have a dream” speech. He gave it to me (almost convincingly I might add.) And here’s where YOU can catch the power of someone’s “I have a nightmare” speech. I asked him write his down. It started off weakly. Nope, re-do it. It picked up power, BUT NO EMOTION. He was flat when he gave it. “This is your nightmare – and it’s flat,” I said. Give it with real emotion.
He couldn’t. It choked him up so badly he couldn’t give it. Now what?
Write me. I will send what I did next.
